LAB-1 — the Capsule Lab portable instrument: two screens, four knobs, a keyboard, and a detachable module.

This demo runs the real Capsule OS through WebAssembly

LAB-1: the open instrument

Honest · Open · Yours to shape — the values that shaped LAB-1, a premium portable studio with synths, a sampler, a drum machine and a real multi-track recorder, and a pressure-sensitive surface that plays like an instrument. It runs Capsule, an open platform, so new engines, effects and community plugins keep arriving long after you buy it — a small machine that quietly grows stronger every day. Built beautifully, priced fairly, and made to be made yours: with a friendly SDK and step-by-step tutorials, you don’t have to be an engineer to shape it.

Premium machined-aluminum build, hand-assembled in Vancouver, Canada.

What it is

One object. An instrument, a studio, and a platform.

An instrument

A pressure-sensitive surface that responds to how hard you mean it — expression that feels human, not like tapping a grid.

A studio

Synths, sampler, drum machine, sequencers, effects and a real multi-track recorder — start and finish a whole song in your hands.

A platform

It runs Capsule — an open plugin platform. Developers build new engines, effects and tools, so your instrument keeps getting better.

Why we’re building it

Your instrument. Yours to open up.

Most portable music gear is finished the day it leaves the factory — a fixed box of sounds, sealed shut. We build the opposite: an honest object you can see into, reach into, and remake. Capsule is an open platform, so LAB-1 keeps gaining engines, effects and ideas — from us, and from anyone who wants to build for it. Nothing hidden, nothing locked away.

Reshape it to play the way you think: rework the controls, add new instruments, make it yours and unmistakably so. It does what the most-loved pocket studios do — and a good deal more — for about half of what they ask, and every unit is hand-assembled in Vancouver, Canada, with a premium build you can feel.

Made with intent

Designed and assembled in Vancouver, Canada.

Every LAB-1 is hand-assembled in Vancouver and engraved with its own serial — built to be lived with for years, not replaced. We design the hardware and the software in-house, and we make real music on it. This is the instrument we set out to build.

What’s next

What we’re building, and when we’re aiming for it.

We build in the open, so here’s what we’re working toward next — targets, not promises; we’ll update them as we go.
